The brightest comet of the past year, c2022 E3 ZTF was discovered by astronomers at the Zwicky Transfer Facility on March 2, 2022. This visitor from the outer solar system likely appeared some 50,000 years ago when our ancestors were just beginning to poplate the planet. E3 ZTF made its closest approach to the sun ( perihelion ) on January 12, and then passed with 0.28 AU of earth on Fegruary 1. As it swung by, it changed its appearance almsot daily. (See thumbnails below). Its typical green color caused it to be named "the Green Comet" by local weather casters and others in the popular media.
